The North Yorkshire coastline is home to a plethora of chippies, pubs and seafood shops. And The Humble Pie ‘n’ Mash Shop offers another classic British treat in the heart of Whitby.
The building itself has been standing on this spot since the 1600s which only adds to the shops overall atmosphere and traditional British vibes.
The shop frontage stands proud on the busy streets of Whitby.
We visited this long-established shop during the coronavirus pandemic and were very pleased by the social distanced tables, track and trace system, and staff wearing face masks. Despite all this, the character of the building and overall experience was not diminished, and we had a very pleasant stay.
The range of pies, hospitality and traditional features of the building from times gone by all added to a great experience. It’s the sort of cafe you visit expecting just a meal, but you leave with so much more, from the food, the history and the ambience.
On our visit we sampled the contemporary chicken and cider pie, and the succulent steak and stout pie. Both were served with a heap of mash, some homemade mushy peas and lashings of thick and tasty gravy. The pies are made in-house every morning with shortcrust pastry, good quality meats and vegetables and classic accompaniments. The chicken was falling apart in the creamy cider sauce, and the steak could have been stewing all day it was so tender. The stout was the perfect accompaniment for the rich flavour of the meat and pastry.
This pie parlour is a place not to miss when you’re in Whitby. The setting will transport you to a simpler time where good food and hospitality would whisk you away from all your worries.
I cannot wait for my next visit.
